Any serious attempt to create a sustainable forest sector on public lands begins with a commitment to multi-partner relationships for planning and decision-making. Dr. Shindler will provide a rationale for this position and discuss important elements of this approach in the context of Canadian and U.S. forestry. Lessons will be drawn from previous attempts to engage citizens in watershed and landscape-level planning and adaptive management, as well as decisions about forest health and fire management in western North America. He will conclude by describing a set of recommendations for strategic planning. A lively discussion will follow.
Dr. Bruce Shindler is a Professor in the Department of Forest Resources at Oregon State University. His research interests include social values of natural resources, public agency-community interactions, and social aspects of wildland fire management.
